Carpentry Layout

Precision layout is the difference between a profitable job and a teardown. This hub covers advanced framing geometry.

Common Rafter Length Calculator

Calculate the exact theoretical length of a common rafter (from ridge center to outside plate) using Pythagorean theorem.

Run = Span / 2
Theoretical Rafter Length
Note: Deduct half the ridge board thickness for actual cut length. Add tail length for overhang.

Nailing Schedules (IBC Table 2304.10.2)

Structural failure usually happens at the connections, not the member itself. Know the code.

  • Joist to sill or girder: 3 - 8d common (toe nail)
  • Top plate to stud: 2 - 16d common (end nail)
  • Built-up girders/beams: 10d common @ 32" o.c. at top and bottom, staggered
